Children with Amoebic Liver Abscess

چکیده

A combination of emetine hydrochloride with chloroquine yields better results than either drug alone in the treatment of amoebic liver abscess in adults (Wilmot, Powell, and Adams, 1959). A similar combination of dehydroemetine with chloroquine is equally satisfactory (Wilmot, Powell, MacLeod, and Elsdon-Dew, 1964; Powell, Wilmot, MacLeod, and Elsdon-Dew, 1967). Dehydroemetine is claimed to be less cardiotoxic than emetine (Schwartz and Herrero, 1965), and in adults it produces fewer electrocardiographic changes when given in identical dosage (Powell, 1967) so that up to 2 mg./kg. day have been given with apparent safety (Powell, Wilmot, MacLeod, and Elsdon-Dew, 1965). In children, amoebic liver abscess carries a high mortality (Scragg, 1960), but a comparative trial of emetine hydrochloride and chloroquine did not show that cardiac toxicity from emetine was a factor in causing death (Scragg and Powell, 1966). The results suggested that emetine was well tolerated by children and that, as in adults, emetine combined with chloroquine might provide the most effective treatment. The present trial reports the results of combining either emetine hydrochloride or dehydroemetine with chloroquine in children with amoebic liver abscess.

Tinidazole in treatment of amoebic liver abscess in children.

Tinidazole as a single drug therapy given in a single dose daily for 5 or 3 days was put to rigorous test in malnourished children. Of 25 children with amoebic liver abscess, 23 were cured. The 2 remaining cases required surgical drainage followed by other amoebicides, one subsequently dying from complicating bronchopneumonia.

Metronidazole and niridazole combined with dehydroemetine in treatment of children with amoebic liver abscess.

Metronidazole and niridazole combined with dehydroemetine in treatment of children with amoebic liver abscess. Metronidazole combined with dehydroemetine cured 13 of 15 children with amoebic liver abscess. An alternative combination of niridazole with dehydroemetine produced cure in 13 of 14 children. No relapses were observed. Electrocardiographic changes were noted in 2 of the first group and...

Emetine hydrochloride and chloroquine in the treatment of children with amoebic liver abscess.

Although amoebic liver abscess is infrequent in children, the outcome is much less favourable than it is in adults. When treated with combined emetine hydrochloride, chloroquine, and aspiration, the prognosis is excellent in adults (Wilmot, 1962), this regime being more successful than treatment with a single drug (Wilmot, Powell, and Adams, 1959; Wilmot, Powell, MacLeod, and Elsdon-Dew, 1964)....

Specific circulating immune complexes in amoebic liver abscess.

A micro enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was used to detect the presence of amoebic antigen in polyethylene-glycol-precipitated circulating immune complexes (CIC). A cutoff dilution of greater than 1:160 for the precipitates was taken to be of clinical significance. Among the patients with amoebic liver abscess, 93% (14 of 15 confirmed cases) had indications of amoebic antigen in CIC. In 57% o...
